Die historische Diagnose Hysterie war über Jahrhunderte eine geschlechtsspezifische Pathologisierung von weiblichem Verhalten, die oft zur Internierung, Entmündigung und Kontrolle führte. Das ArToll Kunstlabor befindet sich auf dem Gelände der LVR-Klinik Bedburg-Hau (ehemals psychiatrische Klinik) und nutzt diese ehemalige Klinik-Architektur als «künstlerischen Ort». Die räumliche Nähe, die gemeinsame Geschichte von Klinik und Kunstprojekten sowie die Praxis des künstlerischen Arbeitens an solchen Orten ermöglichen eine kritische Auseinandersetzung mit (geschlechts-)psychiatrischer Vergangenheit — zugleich schafft ArToll Raum für Sichtbarmachung, Erinnerung und neue Formen von Teilhabe.
Hysterie steht für die historische Pathologisierung von Weiblichkeit; Feminismus macht diesen Mechanismus sichtbar, kritisiert ihn als Herrschaftsinstrument und transformiert ihn zugleich in eine Ressource feministischer Selbstermächtigung.

For centuries, the historical diagnosis of hysteria was a gender-specific pathologization of female behavior, often leading to internment, incapacitation, and control. The ArToll art laboratory is located on the grounds of the LVR-Klinik Bedburg-Hau (formerly a psychiatric clinic) and utilizes this former clinic architecture as an "artistic space." The spatial proximity, the shared history of the clinic and art projects, and the practice of artistic work in such spaces enable a critical examination of (gender-)psychiatric pasts—at the same time, ArToll creates space for visualization, remembrance, and new forms of participation. Hysteria represents the historical pathologization of femininity; feminism makes this mechanism visible, criticizes it as an instrument of domination, and simultaneously transforms it into a resource for feminist self-empowerment.
