Kirsten Becken holds a varied artistic position as a multidisciplinary artist.
Her creative practice encompasses Photography, Film and Painting.
Her photographic series Ophelia Revisited is testify to a feminist lens, portraying women who are self-determined, at peace, and actively shaping their own imagery subverting traditional portrayals of female characters. She consciously uses the female body as a means of expression for autonomy and at the same time as a surface for reflection on social power relations. With L’Origine du Monde she is reclaiming its narrative.
As co-founder of femxphotographers.org she likes to amplify female artists’ visibility and challenge the male-dominated art-world. Kirsten Becken uses the female body in her art as a critical tool for exploring power, control, and social expectations. She thereby exposes how bodies become the arena of social, political, and cultural struggles.
In 2015 her son was born.
And in 2017 she published Seeing Her Ghosts at VfmK Verlag Wien.
2018 she co-founded the non-hierarchical artist collective femxphotographers.org.
Her art film Ihre Geister Sehen starring Sandra Hüller was in 2021 awarded by independent film festivals.
Works by Becken are part of private collections in Germany, France and the Netherlands. Ongoing photographic works are Girls In Trees, Ophelia Revisited and L'Origine Du Monde. Ongoing video work Spilling Something.
